BEEF CATTLE EVALUATION AND STOCKMAN’S CONTEST

FRIDAY, APRIL 11, 2008

 

This contest is open to all youth, 4-H, FFA and other youth

between the ages of 8 and 18 as of January 1, 2008.

There is a registration fee of $5 per team and you must pre-register.  Registration this year is on-line.  Teams must consist of four (4) members.  Individuals who are not a part of a team, or in cases where four (4) individuals cannot be assembled for a team, may participate and compete for individual awards.  Registration for individuals is $1/person.  Payment must be made at the time of registration or the morning of the contest.  Checks (and we would rather have checks) should be made payable to WVCA.

 

This year there will be a junior and a senior division.  Juniors are ages 8-13 as of 1/1/08.  No senior is eligible if they are not currently in school(no college students).  If there is a mixed team of juniors and seniors, which is permitted, they will compete as seniors.

 

The following awards will be presented to juniors:

1.       First, second, and third place teams – trophies

2.       First through third place individuals – trophies

 

The following awards will be presented to seniors:

  1. First Place Team - $300 & trophies
  2. Second Place Team - $200 & trophies
  3. Third Place Team - $100 & trophies
  4. Fourth Place Team - $50
  5. First Place Individual - $100 & trophy
  6. Second through tenth place individual

(i.e., 2nd - $90, 3rd - $80, 10th - $10)

 

Individual awards become the property of the individual.  Team awards become the property of the 4-H organization or FFA Chapter which they represent.  Team members must be members of 4-H or FFA.  Awards will be presented in the show arena at approximately 5.00 p.m.

 

Classes

 

The contest will consist of nine (9) classes, each class worth 50 points and one class worth 100 points.  There will be three (3) cattle classes  which will be placing classes of four animals in each class and one keep/cull class (100 points) if arrangements can be made to obtain eight heifers for this class.  Five questions (10 total) will be asked from each of two of the placing classes and these will be identified at the beginning of the contest.  Cattle questions (each worth 5 points) will be asked following the quiz in the arena without the use of notes.

 

There may be one class of bulls and/or one class of cow-calf pairs.  At least one class will utilize EPD’s for birth, weaning, and yearling weight, milk and other EPD’s that are appropriate for that breed such as calving ease direct (CED) and maternal (CEM), scrotal circumference, heifer pregnancy, etc.  Data might include ultrasound information as either an EPD or actual measurement and ratio.  Cattle in classes which utilize EPD’s will be true contemporaries.

 

There will be one (1) quiz class.  This class will consist of ten (10) questions each worth five (5) points.  Contestants will be expected to answer questions without the use of notes.  Contestants will be seated in the arena as a group for this class and the ten questions will be asked allowing contestants time to answer each question before the next is asked.  Each question will be repeated at least once.  All parents, coaches and others will be asked to remain outside.

There will be one (1) class of retail meat identification.  This class will be multiple choice with (4) choices for each sample.   

 

There will be one (1) class of hay consisting of four (4) hay samples.  Contestants will be expected to rank the samples 1-4.  This class will consist of one of the following types:  grass, alfalfa, grass-alfalfa mix, or grass-clover mix.

 

There will be one (1) class on plant identification.  Contestants will be asked to identify samples numbered one (1) through ten (10).  This class will be multiple choice.  Each sample will have (4) choices.

There will be one class on grading feeder cattle. The class will consist of five animals that each contestant will be asked to evaluate.  Each contestant will be instructed to mark their score sheet for both muscling and frame score.  For example, if the first animal is a medium frame score and number 2 muscling, then the contestant would mark both the medium and number 2 spots for animal number 1.  Each answer will be worth 5 points for a total of 10 points per animal and 50 points for the class.

Registration for this years event needs to be submitted in an Excel spreadsheet and sent as an attachement to RRHelmondollar@mail.wvu.edu .  When you open the attachment you will need to save it on your computer before you start filling in the information.  You need to enter the team name, coach’s name, team members and their birth dates.  When you enter the birth date, the age and section will automatically correct to the proper age and section.  Remember mixed teams (juniors and seniors) will be competing as seniors.  After you have completed filling in the information, SAVE the file on your computer where you can find it.  This is important.  Team packets will be distributed at the contest.  The contest is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m., April 11.  Team packets will be available at the EEC Building (not the barn office) beginning at 9:00 a.m. on April 11.  This will relieve congestion in the barn area.  Please check in as soon as possible after you arrive.
