The Bar Z Ranch is owned by the Zutavern family and has operated in the sandhills of Nebraska since 1902.

Bar Z is a commercial cow/calf operation and works closely with Summitcrest Angus

Rishel Angus is owned by Bill and Barb Rishel.  This is a performance herd that was one of the early Angus herds to evaluate carcass merit.  Their cattle carry the highly recognized B/R prefix and some of the cattle they bred include:  B/R New Design 036, B/R New Design 323, and B/R New Frontier 095.  They have an annual bull sale in March and a female sale in October.  They received the 2001 Certified Angus Beef Seedstock Commitment to Excellence Award.  Bill, who has a Master’s Degree in Animal Breeding & Genetics has served as Chairman of Certified Angus Beef LLC, is a NCBA Board member, and they are members of U.S. Premium Beef.

Schurrtop is a family operation with John and Kay Schurr working side by side with their sons Marty, Wayne, Ryan and John’s brother Jerry.  They have both Charolais and Angus cattle and have long focused on carcass merit.  They began carcass evaluation in 1971, but prior to that their cattle were receiving top honors in the Great Western Beef Expo and still do.  In addition to carcass merit they also focus on cow productivity and believe in culling the bottom end of their herd rather than selling them to someone else as breeding stock.  As a part of their operation they have their own feedlot and feed the lower end of their cattle.  Most of these cattle are marketed on a value-based grid.  They have annual bull sales in December and April.  They are members of Angus America.

Summitcrest is owned by Fred Johnson and was the 1991 BIF Seedstock Producer of the Year.  It is one of the largest seedstock Angus operations in the US with locations in Iowa and Ohio in addition to Nebraska.  The general manager is Henry Bergfeld and the Nebraska unit is managed by Sam Johnson.  Summitcrest was a leader in the carcass movement and Fred Johnson played a major role in the Angus Association’s development of the Certified Angus Beef program. The Nebraska unit consists of approximately 16,000 acres and includes 1500 bred females and their own feedlot where they develop  bulls and feed out about 400 head of their steers.

Since the late 1800’s the Haythorn family has operated in the Nebraska Sandhills.  The ranch consists of about 90,000 acres in three counties.  They have both cattle and horses but it is their Quarter Horses that the ranch has become so well known for.  They are the largest breeder of Quarter Horses in the US and were the first recipient of NCBA”s Best Remuda Award.  They also have about 90 teams of Belgian/Percheron cross draft horses which are used to feed hay in the winter and stack hay in the summer.  The ranch is operated by Craig and Jody Haythorn.

North Platte Feeders was established in 1989 and is managed by Jack McCaffery.  The lot’s geographical location allows a tri-state marketing area.

The feedlot has a capacity of 50,000 head with individual pen sizes of 70 to 100 head each.  North Platte Feeders is a very tightly managed operation with careful attention to the details. Rations are mixed in a modern, on-site feed mill and feature steam-flaked corn.
